The Grand Genting Highlands Resort

Genting Highlands Resort

The grand and majestic Genting Highlands Resort is an integrated hill resort that is very luxurious. Comprised of hotels, shopping malls, theme parks and casinos, this resort is one of the best resorts that Malaysia has to offer. It is also one of the most visited resorts both in Asia and in the world. Located between the border of Pahang and Selangor and rests above the peak of Mount Ulu Kali, Genting Highlands is just an hour drive from Kuala Lumpur.

Construction and Development

Initially, the area around Genting Highlands was just a plain mountain with indefinite precipices. But then, a person came up with an idea to build a resort hill around the mountains. That person was Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong – who would go on to become the founder of Genting Highlands.

In 1963, while he was working on a hydro-electric power project in Cameron Highlands, he envisaged a wonderful mountain holiday resort for both locals and tourists to enjoy. To put the plan to fruition, he assembled a group to work on the project. By then, a private company called Genting Highlands Berhad was set up on 27 April 1965.

All the construction work started on 18 August 1965, in which a technical and construction team started working on the project. They initially began a four-year task on trying to construct and set up the access road from Genting Sempah to the peak of Gunung Ulu Kali. This access road would then be the access road to get to Genting Highlands nowadays. By March 31 1969, the late Tunku Abdul Rahman, who was Malaysia’s first-ever prime minister, laid down the foundation stone. Which marked the completion of the access road.

In 1971, the construction of the first hotel at Genting Highlands was completed. Named, Highlands Hotel, it is now renamed as Theme Park Hotel. The resort then continued on to expand.

Progress Throughout The Years

The development of the area was also overlooked by several environmental advisors to ensure that the beauty of the ecosystem in the region was not to be damaged. A breakthrough in the development happened in 1997 – where Genting Highlands Resort added the Genting Skyway cable car. This cable car was deemed to be the “Longest Cable Car in Malaysia and Probably in Southeast Asia”.

More revolution was also going to happen. In 2013, Genting Highlands devised a master plan which was called the Genting integrated Tourism Plan (GITP). This was a 10-year master plan for development, expansion, enhancement and renewal of the hotels, theme parks and infrastructures at Genting Highlands. The plan comprises of adding a new 1,300 hotel rooms to the First World Hotel, as well as adding a 10,000 seats arena. The plan also proposed the conversion of the Genting Outdoor Theme Park to 20th Century Fox World.
